HuFree: Gallery

Opened in May 2025, HuFree Gallery showcases and celebrates the photography and film inspired artwork arising from working class life in HU3. It takes a closer look at the people and lives, past and present, that are often hidden or paid scant attention. We explore the national and international links that reflect our beautifully diverse HU3 community and shape who we are.

We’ve developed the HuFree Gallery in collaboration with Western Library, who, like us, are keen to celebrate the area, utlise their assets and generate relevant cultural experiences for residents and wider communities. We program three spaces – the entrance foyer, the entire large second floor and a series of display cases in the main library.

HuFree Gallery is a work progress. It will grow and adapt and we hope you join us as it does. Programmed with, by and for HU3 residents, creatives, groups, business and schools, it welcomes visitors from everywhere. Alongside exhibitions there are workshops, talks and activities and we have ambitions to generate a range of training and skills development opportunities too. Through this work we aim to spot the unique and incredible things happening here that often go unnoticed, including the prevalence of photography in and about the area that is, ironically, also not visible enough.
